Get to Galena – June Edition

Have you ever explored Galena? Whether it’s a family trip, a golf outing with your buddies, or a girlfriend getaway, this is a destination you don’t want to miss. Known for beautiful views, a rich history, small boutiques, and rolling vineyards, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Galena. So, what are you waiting for? Here are just a few things to do this month once you’re here!

25th Annual Historic Cemetery Walk

On June 9 & 10, the Galena-Jo Daviess County Historical Society will honor the lives and contributions of past Galenians with its annual Cemetery Walk! This year, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI, the walk will feature individuals who lived during that time period, whether they fought in the war or supported the effort from home.

“Cemetery Walk combines history with the dramatic arts to tell true stories about important past Galenians,” says Executive Director Nancy Breed. “I think people come away with a great appreciation for the challenging lives these characters led, and perhaps a better appreciation for all the good things we enjoy today.”

The walk will take place June 9-10 at Greenwood Cemetery, with guided walking tours starting every 20 minutes between 2-4:30 p.m.

Great Galena Balloon Race

The Great Galena Balloon Race will take place this year from June 15-17 at Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa! Admission is only $5, and all proceeds will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Camp Hertko Hollow, a camp for kids with diabetes.

Friday and Saturday night activities go from 5-10 p.m. and consist of live music, tethered balloon rides, food and beverages and inflatables for the kids! Galena River Wine and Cheese will sponsor an Ale Fest on Friday from 6-8:30 p.m. for craft beer tasting, and a wine tasting on Saturday also from 6-8:30 p.m. ($30 tickets)! Saturday and Sunday morning will both feature Crack of Dawn Balloon races.

So, grab some lawn chairs and blankets and stop by the event to support a great charity and enjoy some hot air balloon entertainment. You won’t be disappointed!

Farmer’s Markets

The Galena Marketplace is open every Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon throughout the summer and fall months, ending October 29. The market provides locally grown produce, organic foods, and craft vendors. There is no admission to roam about the market, located at the Market House at 123 Commerce St. in Galena, just a block from Main Street!

In addition to Galena’s market, there are farmer’s markets held on Wednesdays in East Dubuque, on Fridays in Elizabeth, on Saturdays in Hanover, and Sundays at the Galena Territory! There’s a market for everyone!
