The History of Disc Golf

You throw frisbees into what? A basket? Anyone who knows the sport knows you don’t sound like a basket case when you say it. Disc golf is a sport that doesn’t have a clear history, but it has been around since at least 1976 when the founding father “Steady” Ed Headrick invented the game. Some reports say a version of the game was being played as early as the 1900s! Today, disc golf has become quite popular, and it’s estimated that 500,000 people play it regularly with over 5,800 courses in the United States.

For those of you who have never played disc golf, it’s similar to the regular game of golf, but instead of using clubs and a ball, you use a frisbee. Generally, a course has 9 or 18 “holes,” which are the baskets you throw the frisbees into. Each hole starts with a tee-off, followed by the players flinging their discs until they reach the basket. Scoring is the same as regular golf. Each time someone throws their disc, that is counted as a stroke. You count the total number of strokes at the end and whoever has the fewest wins.

So, want to play? Well, you’re in luck because Chestnut Mountain Resort, located in beautiful Galena, Illinois, has a 9-Hole Disc Golf course! Whether you’re an expert, beginner, or just looking to hone your skills, our course offers an enjoyable and entertaining challenge for all levels.

So, put your clubs down and trade it in for a frisbee. Head to Chestnut Mountain Resort this summer, pick up a disc, and give it a go! You just might be glad you did.
