The Off-Road Segway Experience: What to Expect

The Segway Tours offered at Chestnut Mountain Resort are the perfect way to get off the grid and into nature in the upcoming months. A Segway is two wheeled, self-balancing modes of transportation that are often showcased zooming along on a sidewalk somewhere in Silicon Valley, but Chestnut Mountain Resort offers guided tours throughout their wooded trails, offering inclines, declines, and all sorts of terrains to ride on.

Before the Adventure

It’s recommended that you arrive about a half an hour early in order to sign the required papers and get prepared for the start of your tour. Before you can ride a Segway you have to sign a Liability Release. If you’re under the age of 18, your parent or guardian can sign for you. This form is available online or you can sign it when you get to the resort.

In order to participate on the Segway Tours, participants must be 14 years old or older. If someone is between the age of 14 or 15, a parent or guardian must be present and take the tour with him/her. Everyone must weigh between 100-260 pounds in order to use a Segway. Participants should have no health-related conditions such as heart problems, balance disorders, pregnancy, broken bones or epilepsy.

Keep in mind that you will be riding along wooded paths, so it’s important to dress appropriately. Because of this, closed-toe and closed-heel shoes with laces are required. You will not be able to ride your Segway without covered feet. Along with this, make sure your clothing is appropriate for this type of adventure. This means comfortable clothing that is not too loose, as this could become a safety concern. Helmets are a requirement and are provided. However, you can bring and use your own as long as it passes inspection.

The Adventure

Make sure you leave all your bags in the car and bring only what you need, such as a wallet, phone, camera, and keys. The Segway has a small travel pouch for important items, but bags have the risk of throwing you off balance while you ride around. A camera is something to highly consider taking in order to capture some of the breath-taking views of the Mighty Mississippi.

To begin you will watch a 15-minute training video to prepare you. After you’re done with the video, you’ll have a hands-on driving training session with your tour guide so that you are ready for the 3-mile, hour-long ride. Your tour guide will show you some of the most picturesque and exhilarating ways to experience the 220 rolling acres of terrain.

After the Adventure

After you experience the adrenaline ensuing ride across Chestnut Mountain, you will come back to the main area in the resort. You will drop off the Segway and helmet and then you can be on your way. The Sunset Grille or The Summit Sports Bar are located at Chestnut Mountain Resort as well and offer a wide variety of dining options to refuel after your Segway ride.

If you’re looking for more adventure, Chestnut Mountain Resort also offers a the Soaring Eagle Zipline across the mountain as well as an Alpine Slide that takes you winding all the way down to the banks of the Mississippi.
