How to prepare for your first Segway trail ride

One of the coolest things you can do at Chestnut Mountain Resort during your summer visit is take part in a Segway Ride! This two-wheel machine will take you and your group on an excursion through the beautiful trails throughout Chestnut, giving you a dose of the outdoors without the exhaustion of a typical hike.

What exactly is a Segway?

A Segway is a two-wheeled, self-balancing device that was brought to market by Dean Kamen in 2001. Its maximum speed is 12.5 miles per hour, making it safe and easy to get the hang of without extensive training. A sensor box below the platform where you stand keeps the personal transportation (PT) device centered and even between the large wheels on either side. It is constantly moving forward and backward to allow you to keep your balance, much the same way as your ankle keeps you supported if you were to stand on one leg.

What should I wear for the trail ride?

The most important accessory that you’ll need for your Segway trail ride is a helmet, but don’t stress, we will provide one for you. While Segways are easy to learn to ride and don’t go very fast, safety is always a priority here at Chestnut Mountain. Other than a helmet, make sure you’re wearing comfortable, non-slip shoes, preferably with a closed-toe. This will ensure your feet don’t slide off the Segway, and you’ll be comfortable enough to stand for the duration of the tour. Other things to keep in mind include sunblock and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun!

Tips on riding

While you will have a full training session right before your Segway ride, here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind during your ride:

  • To move forward, shift your weight towards your toes. The Segway will sense your movement and start moving forwards.
  • To stop, shift your weight towards your heels and push your arms and the handle forwards.
  • Try not to make any sudden or quick movements! Your Segway will adjust to very slight movements, so just stay calm and trust the wheels.
  • Don’t lock your knees! The trail ride will be about 75-90 minutes long, so keep a slight bend in your knees and engage your core muscles to keep you upright during the ride and keep the circulation moving in your legs.
  • Ask lots of questions. Your instructor is there for a reason! If at any time you’re unsure of what you’re doing or need a couple pointers, do not hesitate to ask.
